The Healing Power of Slowing Down: Why Therapy and Rest Matter More Than Ever

In our fast-paced world, slowing down often feels like a luxury—but what if it’s actually a necessity?
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sitting with some deeply personal emotions. A close friend’s health news reminded me just how fragile life really is. It sent me into a whirlwind of worry, sadness, and reflection. And while these aren’t easy feelings to carry, I know from experience that ignoring them only prolongs the discomfort.
As a therapist, I often remind clients (and myself) that the only way out is through. We must feel our feelings—however messy or uncomfortable—in order to truly release them. For me, journaling is a powerful outlet. But one of the most grounding practices in my life is my weekly therapy session.
Why Weekly Therapy Is a Non-Negotiable
Therapy offers something few other experiences do: a sacred, uninterrupted space to be fully seen and heard. In that hour, I’m able to slow down, connect the dots between emotions and thoughts, and find stability amid chaos.
When life feels overwhelming—especially during busy seasons like the end of the school year—it's easy to push self-care to the bottom of the to-do list. But showing up for therapy is my way of saying, I matter. Even with a full schedule, therapy remains the one thing I never cancel. (Yes, the cancellation policy helps. But more than that, I know the healing that’s waiting for me on the other side.)
Therapy as a Form of Rest
Therapy doesn’t just help me process emotions—it supports multiple dimensions of rest. According to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, there are seven types of rest we all need to thrive:
Mental Rest
Physical Rest
Sensory Rest
Creative Rest
Spiritual Rest
Emotional Rest
Social Rest
Weekly therapy touches many of these areas at once, especially mental, emotional, and spiritual rest. It offers a pause, a reset, and often, a moment of profound insight.
Other Powerful Ways to Practice Rest
Rest isn’t always about doing nothing. Sometimes it’s about intentional, nourishing choices that fill us up in quiet, meaningful ways. Here are some rest practices that have supported me lately:
Listening to music while gardening
Phone-free periods. Like a tech-free walk outside
Taking 1 minute to close my eyes, breathe, and stretch in the middle of the day
Reading fiction
Doodling or painting with no goal
Doing something “unproductive” just for joy
Taking a drive by myself to get bread at the farm stand far away, with the windows down
Saying “no” without guilt
These little pauses may seem small, but they’re radical acts of self-care. And they all align with the mission of Reset—which was founded to help people slow down, reconnect, and heal.

Recently, I wore our sweatshirt that read, “In My Slow Down Era.” Three strangers stopped me in one hour to talk about it. Clearly, we’re all craving a different pace.
That’s what inspired our Deep Healing Immersive Experience, and the feedback was beautiful. Nearly every participant expressed gratitude for showing up—for themselves. Because honestly? Showing up is the hardest part.
If you're a fellow Type A, recovering perfectionist, or just someone who’s busy, I encourage you to build your own anchors—therapy, walks, creative time, whatever helps you drop into yourself. Make them part of your calendar, your rhythm, your life.

Tools
I’ve been engaging in mental flossing this week, posing, “Is it true? Is it loving? Is it beneficial?” when noticing thoughts arise. This practice of awareness of our thoughts is essential to helping us get out of a reactive cycle.
Gratitude
Almost our entire team uses slowdown techniques in sessions, and one of my favorites is yoga. Using yoga as a therapeutic tool has been profound for so many clients. When clients walk away from a session having felt something shift, they are 1000% more grateful they showed up. Next time, try it, or go ahead and engage with one of our therapists.
Innovation
Slowing down is a revolution, and we’ve been on the quest for it since Reset started. It’s always been about slowing down. Pause, breath, Reset, is what we say often. The more we slow down, the more gray matter we develop and strengthen our pre-frontal cortex, the area of our brain that helps with responses to stress vs reactions. Slowing down is biologically imperative.
