Integrative Method: Mindfulness

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: On purpose, in the present moment, without judgment. Instead of judgment or criticism, this attention is curious and kind.” —Jon Kabat Zinn

In today’s fast paced and always connected world it is not our natural response to slow down and just be. We’re always feeling pressure to do more, multitask, follow up and check in. But a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. The more we drift our attention to things other than the present moment, the more discontent, stressed and disconnected we are. Chronic stress, anxiety, ADHD and depression continue to rise at epidemic levels at the same time our lives are busier and more out of touch with reality. There is a connection.

Present awareness, or Mindfulness, is an antidote to this fast-paced world. With practice, clients can gain the indisputable benefits of mindfulness to support emotional and mental well being.

Mindfulness can include a variety of techniques and forms:

  • Mindful meditation

  • Mindful eating

  • Mindful observing

  • Mindful movement

  • Intention setting

  • Journaling

  • Brain trivia and teasers

  • Emotional intelligence and awareness exercises

  • Executive functioning training

Benefits of Mindfulness:

  • Become conscious of our decision-making and behaviors

  • Build contentment and gratitude for what is

  • Develop peace and acceptance for the things we cannot change or control

  • Stimulate neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to grow and adapt)

  • Rewire old patterns and behaviors to create new, healthier habits and coping skills

  • Bring non-judgmental awareness to our thoughts, feelings and behaviors

  • Practice compassion towards yourself and others

  • Synchronize body, mind, and nervous system

  • Turn attention inward to how feelings are experienced in the body
